Sermermiut

Summer

A short walk to the edge of the icefjord via the ancient Inuit settlement of Sermermuit.

After meeting at the Sports Hall in the centre of town, we will walk uphill past the sled dogs that surround the outskirts of Ililissat. From there we will pass the icefjord centre where you will be able to see the towering icebergs for the first time. Then we will walk down the wooden walkway, which helps cross the boggy terrain, with every step the enormous icebergs become clearer and more impressive. At the small bay of Semermuit, your guide will tell you the history of this long abandoned settlement that existed for thousands of years. Then, up some short steps to the greatest view of the day, the icefjord. There are a couple of benches where we can sit and watch the icebergs float lazily down the fjord and where you won’t be able to resist taking lots of photos. After an explanation about the formation and history of the icefjord from your local guide, you will head back to town where the tour will finish.
