Summer
A circular trail that takes you along the icefjord. This trail is for the hiker who wants to see icebergs from every angle and get a taste of Greenland’s backcountry. Good quality hiking boots are required for traversing the rocky terrain.
Starting at the Sports Hall in the centre of Illissat, we will walk through the outskirts of town to the shipping container yard, where locals keep their boats, snowmobiles and ATVs. Then passing through the sled dogs, we will head upwards (100m elevation gain) through a rocky canyon. From the top you’ll get your first glimpse of the icebergs and also a bird’s eye view of Ilulissat. Then we will go past a lake surrounded by mountains hiking down next to a stream which leads to the beach. From the beach we will walk up and along the icefjord, where your guide will offer expert knowledge regarding the formation and history of the fjord but also the flora and fauna of the area. On this stretch of the hike you will get a drink and snacks while enjoying the silence of the backcountry. Finally, we will head back, past Sermermuit (the site of an ancient Inuit settlement) and to the Icefjord centre where the tour will end.

Winter
A circular trail that takes you along the icefjord. This trail is for the hiker who wants to see icebergs from every angle and get a taste of Greenland’s backcountry. Good quality winter boots are required for traversing rocks and in case of deep snow.
Then we will cross a frozen lake, the ice is thick and in sections you may be able to peer through it seeing bubbles trapped on their way to the surface. Then we will hike (and maybe slide) down a frozen stream which leads to the frozen beach. From the beach we will walk up and along the icefjord, where your guide will offer expert knowledge regarding the formation and history of the fjord but also the flora and fauna of the area. On this stretch of the hike you will get a hot drink and snacks while enjoying the silence of the backcountry. Finally, we will head back, past Sermermuit (the site of an ancient Inuit settlement) and to the Icefjord centre where the tour will end.
